MS Lord Selkirk II
Years ago, this 176 foot long ship sailed the Red River and Lake Winnipeg and was one of the largest passenger vessels in western Canada. Now, the rusting and slowly decaying hulk of the MS Lord Selkirk II rests and waits. Either she’ll be scrapped (which was the plan years ago) or will certainly continue to sink and roll over (or be the victim of another arsonist). This is the first time I’ve photographed the ship and I’ll likely head out again when I have more time, perhaps in winter, when the snow should create an interesting backdrop to the eerie looking remnant. I also shot this subject in black and white for the Monochromia blog. If you like black and white photographs, check out that blog (which is host to many talented photographers)! Monochromia

Very nice! I especially like the second photo– gorgeous rust!
Thank you West! Some rusty, crusty old metal often makes for a good photo subject :)
Oh Mike, how fantastic. There is something haunting about old ships, they have a soul – or maybe hold the souls of those who once traveled by her. I love these in color and will check them out in B&W on Monochromia as well. I look forward to any winter shots – I agree the snow would be enchanting.
Glorious photos!
Peace and light, always.
It’s the photo from the Manitoba Archives that startled me the most ! Wow. Not many of those to be found in NYC.
love it!
Looks good, Mike (How about some interior shots …)
Rusted metal. It reminds me of how some people allow their life to decay. Both have points at which no rehab will help. This shot obviously got me thinking, Mike. Tangentially. :)
So Sorry to see this photo. My wife & I took the MS Lord Selkirk 2 back in 1987, when we were just dating. It was a banquet that Petro Canada had given to us who were “Petro Pride” winners. Was truly a wonderful experience and hearing of the now abandoned ship was quite sad for me to hear. I must someday go see it and do as you did, take photos of it before it vanishes forever.
My mistake….I guess it was in ’85…not ’87. I was not 100% sure of the year, but it was when I worked for Petro Canada from 1985 ~ 87.
Sad to see a once beautiful ship in such shape. My sister and I took an evening cruise on her a long, long time ago.
It’s great! Rust always makes interesting photos…I also like the black and white version!! I think I like it even more…:) I just can’t resist black and white :)
Sadly it is happening all the time! Some old and remarkable things are dying and loosing their beauty!
The sky in the 1st one is compatible with the eerie feel of the ship. The 2nd photo has a completely different feel. It could be a ship being showcased at a nautical museum.
Great photography ….

p.s. I’d love to have you stop by my photo blog if you have time. I’m a novice. Is there any hope for my pox’s. Thanks …. 😴

Beautiful!
Poor old thing, what a sad decline . . . beautiful shots however!
Another good suit of pics , Mike , of a vessel in terminal decline , awaiting option of being broken or left to demise on its own , juxtaposed with image during her heydays…your planned winter shots will add further character to the pics as snow is a classic symbol of death…best wishes…raj
WOW amazing! I want to go inside…….
